Thanks to some donated hardware, CALS (and the relay museum) has moved to a new server on a new ip address.

The following doesn't (yet) work:

• Password resets via email
• Publicly available but encrypted backups of the database
• CSV dumps of some of the tables of the database
• No doubt other things has been overlooked

Warning: much tech speak ahead:

Hardware-wise, the new box is a 1U HP Proliant with 12GB of memory. 600GB SAS disks in mirrored ZFS, for maximum paranoia.

Software-wise, all the underlying stuff is upgraded just about to the max. Now all that is needed is to upgrade CALS itself.

A badly behaved bot is basically engaging in a denial of service of CALS, the way CALS runs now.

According to the robots.txt, no robot should connect more often than every 600 seconds (that's every ten minutes), but this one interprets any number of seconds above 10 as 10, and further behaves as if that timeout is per connecting ip-address, not per bot. Ergo, 90% of accesses has lately been this one bot. The only (temporary) fix is to restart the http server.

Progress is under way to change how the net talks to CALS, including a firewall that recognizes bad bots. This is being set up on a temporary server. When everything works, CALS will move there (with some things turned off, like online backups and the csv-files), the old server will be reinstalled from scratch, and then CALS will move back, provided the hardware doesn't go up in smoke in the meantime.
